The Case Against Summer

This year I am so excited to be starting up the Reading Improvement Camp - but the more I get into this, I think I should have called it the Summer Headstart Program.  I know that could be confusing because we already have headstart programs here in Canada, but calling it the Summer Advantage would be copying a very successful program in the US.

All that being said, it is interesting as we start up this summer program and discuss what an updated education system for the 21st century looks like to come across an article called The Case Against Summer from Time Magazine in 2010.  I believe for special learning needs students to completely get out of the school routine doesn't help anyone - the family, the school and most of all, the student.  However, the learning loss seen over a week of missed school, is amazing - 10 weeks or more has to have a significant impact!

As I debate the merits and necessity of changing up how we organize the school year, check out this article from Time Magazine and tell me what you think!
